True Story: When I decided on a career change, my initial idea was to start an online magazine.
I love writing and the idea of coming up with my own ideas, then writing and publishing them sounded absolutely perfect.
But then my business partner threw a spanner in the works…
“How are you going to get people to read it?“
Hmmm… good question.
Because “how are you going to get people to read it?” is a question that applies to everyone who’s got their own website.
Sometimes the question changes:
– “How are you going to get people to buy your stuff?“
– “How are you going to convince people to use your services?“
But the problem is the same for everyone:
How on earth do I get people to MY site?!
And so began my journey into the myriad ways a person can promote their website. In other words, I dived head-first into digital marketing.
(“Diving,” for the record, is an appropriate term because there’s an ocean of information out there).
And while some of it’s really good, even some of the free stuff, it’s difficult to know:
- What’s good and what’s rubbish?
- What’s up-to-date and what’s old?
And the big one…
- What’s actually free and what’s pretending to be, but with the ulterior motive of getting you to pay for something eventually?
It can all make you feel like you’re drowning.
Going back to the first time I typed “what is digital marketing” into Google, things were a mess in my mind.
I knew I could learn from online articles but I didn’t know where to start.
There’s a reason school teachers don’t just point you in the direction of some articles and say “crack on!”
Let me give you a real-life example of the mess I’m referring to:
That is a genuine screenshot of all the folders, sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, articles, videos, infographics etc. etc. etc. I bookmarked to read when I was embarking on my own educational journey.
It was ridiculous.
There was simply no good way to organise, study, digest and apply that information using the free information I found online.
And even if I could, how would I know that my new knowledge was correct?
